Questions pros ask

How much sod do I need for a lawn?

Measure the area in square feet and add 5–10% for cuts, curves and the odd bad roll. Sod is sold by the pallet, and a pallet covers about 400–500 ft² depending on the farm and whether it is slab or roll — check with your supplier, because ordering by area and paying by pallet is where the margin goes.

How much should I charge to lay sod?

Price = (material + labour) × (1 + markup). Material is the pallets you actually buy, not the area you measured. Labour is prep plus installation: stripping and grading the old lawn usually costs more hours than laying the new one.

What is a typical installed price per square foot?

Published ranges for 2026 sit around $2.10–$3.55 per ft² installed, against roughly $0.95–$1.15 per ft² for the sod at the farm. The gap is delivery, prep, labour, haul-away and your overhead — which is why the markup field here starts at 30% rather than a bare profit margin. The calculator gives your number from your costs; the line under the price tells you how it compares to the published range.

Why does prep get its own field?

Because it is the part that gets underestimated. Killing or stripping the old lawn, grading, and getting a truck near the site can take longer than laying the sod, and a quote that only counts installation time loses money on exactly the jobs that look easy.
